Who is Matt Perez?

Matt Perez (b. 1993) is a self-taught contemporary documentary and street photographer based in Chicago, IL. He discovered photography through skateboarding, where photographs and print magazines continue to push the culture forward. From there he discovered the art of photography, learning from legendary photographers like Robert Frank, Lee Friedlander, Garry Winogrand, and Henry Wessel to name a few. Seeing their images drives Matt to continue the heritage and legacy of documentary photography.

His images explore the social and literal landscapes of the city he grew up in, seeing it openly every time he steps out. He seeks to ask questions through photographs more than reveal answers. The photographs featured on this website are a combination of 35mm and 120 film photographs that have mostly been self developed and scanned.

Matt also works in the photo industry as a freelance photo assistant in the worlds of e-commerce, product + food photography, and corporate marketing. He has done work for companies like Salesforce, Adidas, Crate and Barrel, CB2, Nurture Life, and more.
